Hello Foxes,
How are you? The fact that we are nearly two weeks into May is frankly a bit rude. Needless to say, I’m buried in a pile of work and missed deadlines. Self-imposed deadlines, nothing critical, but still. I’m feeling antsy.
Revision work continues on Whisperers/Angels. Have I explained how Angels ties in? Maybe not. Angels is a companion story of sorts that runs alongside books 2-4 of the Whisperers. (Because it’s just not a Fox story if it’s not Complicated.)
What that means is I’m now making a detailed scene list of all three remaining Whisperers books and Angels and figuring out where they mesh together. Which points are fixed. Which ones can move or fudge a bit. And how events in one book might be reflected in the other. Naturally, this is done in a spreadsheet.
You’d think the spreadsheet thing would make me happy, but no, this is my least favourite part of the project because I’m incapable of writing helpful scene outlines as I draft. Particularly useless examples include:
“Del painting” There are at least five of these. He’s a painter. That’s what he DOES)
“Ursa finds something” Finds what? Who knows.
“Jack visits his mother” Like he does every Tuesday
“Santo kissing” Um. That’s nice?
But despite my resistance, I always end up with a stronger story for doing this work, so onwards I go.
And the upside is it’ll make for a fun tandem read for folks who like to do that! (Don’t worry if you’re not inclined, the books can be read in series order as well.)
Shout out to the mums who read
Since it is the time, happy mother’s day to all the mums out there! I grew up reading thanks to my mum, and discussing books with her is still something that brings me great joy.
If you also enjoy sharing books with your family, the Aussie Indie Mother’s Day book fair is a great place to pick up some new and interesting titles!
You’ll find the first two books of my Lightless Prophecy series in it. Darkhaven is not particularly kind to mothers, since Gabby’s mum is largely absent and morally dubious, but Gabby does have Nancy, her best friend’s mum and former librarian, who is always there to make a cake for Gabby’s birthday or have a quiet chat when Gabby needs it.
(Note the dates are Australian times, so it might end on the 10th for you!)
All right. Plot revisions await. Time does not. On with it, Fox. Have a brilliant weekend and I’ll check in again soon!
Happy reading,
Kel
